The Dutch system includes WO research universities and HBO universities of applied sciences, plus specialist arts and business providers. International applicants must compare the exact English-taught degree, because not every programme at an international-looking institution is taught in English.

This guide is written for adults applying from outside the EU/EEA. It includes only complete English-taught degree programmes, or an official process that directly affects those students. An exchange semester, minor, summer school, English marketing page or partly English Dutch degree is not silently presented as a full English degree. Fees refer only to the non-EU position. Official programme pages remain the final authority because intake, language, selection and fees can change by academic year.
The institution list is a discovery hub. Every detail page should lead back to the official programme, fee, admission and immigration information.
Use institution type, programme curriculum and admissions fit as the primary filters; use city and broad reputation only after those checks.
The examples below are decision evidence, not a commercial ranking. Each entry keeps the institution, offering, degree level, teaching language, non-EU fee position and admission route together. A fee or condition from one programme must not be copied to another programme at the same institution.

A non-EU applicant normally pays the institutional tuition fee, not the lower Dutch statutory fee. Citizenship, an existing residence right or a previous Dutch qualification can create exceptions, but the institution must confirm them. Always select the exact 2026–2027 programme, degree level and intake. An application fee, visa charge, housing deposit, insurance payment or refundable living-cost transfer is not tuition. For a multi-year programme, the next academic year can have a newly set tariff, so multiplying the first-year amount does not create a guaranteed total.
Build a complete budget for tuition, rent, deposit, utilities, insurance, immigration, books, laptop, materials, travel and daily life. Art, laboratory, fieldwork and hospitality programmes can add compulsory equipment, trips or accommodation. Housing is scarce in many Dutch cities and admission does not guarantee a room. Scholarships are limited and competitive; treat one as income only after a formal award. Keep a reserve for exchange-rate movements, fee changes and a later-than-expected housing start. Never transfer money to an unofficial agent, landlord or bank account.
Foreign qualifications are assessed by the institution. Bachelor’s admission can depend on diploma level and subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology or economics. Master’s admission can depend on the bachelor’s field, course content, ECTS, research methods, statistics, programming, portfolio or work experience. A general diploma comparison is useful preparation but is not an admission decision. Upload the complete diploma and transcript, follow the translation rules and provide detailed course descriptions when titles do not show the required content. Conditional admission still requires the outstanding evidence by the stated deadline.
For an English-taught programme, confirm the accepted IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge or other test, the overall score, every component score, the result’s validity and the verification method. General Training, online editions, MyBest scores, One Skill Retake or Duolingo are accepted only where the institution explicitly says so. Previous education in English gives an exemption only under the published rule; a school letter is not a universal waiver. Take the test early enough for a retake and official score delivery before both the academic and immigration deadlines.
Eligibility and selection are different. A numerus-fixus programme can require an early Studielink request and then tests, assignments or ranking. Art and design can require a portfolio, audition and interview. A master’s may request references, a research proposal, GMAT/GRE evidence or professional experience. Even without national numerus fixus, a faculty can reject applicants who do not match the curriculum or close when capacity is reached. Track every selection task, interview time, offer-response date and ranking acceptance separately.
Studielink is often the first administrative step for a publicly funded degree, but it is rarely the complete application. The institution normally opens a separate portal for diplomas, transcripts, passport, English evidence, payment and programme-specific documents. Private or specialist providers can use direct application. Keep the same passport name, programme and intake in every system. “Submitted” in Studielink does not prove that the institution file is complete. The application, document, selection, tuition-payment and immigration deadlines can all be different.
For study longer than 90 days, many non-EU students need an MVV entry visa and/or VVR study residence permit. A recognised educational sponsor normally files the application after admission and after the financial and document requirements have been met. Admission is not a visa, and visa sponsorship is not housing. Confirm that the exact full-time on-campus programme qualifies; online, part-time, exchange and short-course routes can differ. After arrival, students must maintain sufficient study progress and complete registration, insurance and any required health procedures.
